The Basics of Poker for Novices

Poker is a card game where the twin elements of luck and skill are required to win. While luck plays a large role in every hand, over time the application of sound strategy will virtually eliminate luck’s variance and give players a consistent advantage over their opponents. To achieve this, it’s important for novices to understand the basics of the game before proceeding further.

To play poker, each player must put in two mandatory bets, called blinds, that go into the pot before any cards are dealt. Once all players have their 2 hole cards, there are three rounds of betting: before the flop, after the flop, and after the river (the final community card). Each round begins with the player to the left of the dealer making a bet. Players can fold, check (no bet), call (match a previous player’s bet), or raise (bet more than the previous player).

As you learn to read other players, you should also pay attention to their “tells.” These are not only nervous habits like fidgeting with their chips or wearing a ring, but they can include how quickly they act when they have a strong hand or a weak one.

Once you’ve got the basics down, it’s time to start learning how to play better hands. A great place to begin is by working on your preflop skills, such as cbetting. This is the first area of the game where beginners can truly set themselves apart from their opponents and maximize their chances of winning.
